The dermatoglyphics of the Muzeina and Gebeliya Bedouin tribes, two small biologically isolated populations, leading a similar
nomadic life under the specific conditions of the Sinai desert, were studied. The differences found between the studied samples
concern particularly the frequencies of palmar and finger pattern types. These differences are in agreement with data on the
origin of the tribes, a Negro and/or European admixture being evident in the Gebeliya dermatoglyphics. The coefficients of
variation for some quantitative dermatoglyphic traits, presumably with a polygenic determination, are lower in the Muzeina
than in the Gebeliya sample. Isolation and consanguinity may exert their influence on the dermatoglyphic traits influencing

Peptides produced by mild chymotryptic digestion of human erythrocyte protein 4.1 mimic the ability of intact 4.1 to promote the binding of spectrin to F-actin. This complex-promoting activity was found to reside in an 8-kDa peptide which was fully functional when dissociated from other protein 4.1-derived peptides, indicating that noncovalent complexes of multiple peptides were not essential for activity. The 8-kDa peptide was incorporated into a ternary complex with spectrin and F-actin in approximately stoichiometric amounts. Amino acid composition and two-dimensional peptide mapping show that the 8-kDa active peptide is located within the 10-kDa region of protein 4.1 which contains a cAMP-dependent phosphorylated site. 相似文献

A lectin specific for chito-oligosaccharides from the exudate of ridge gourd (Luffa acutangula) fruits has been purified to homogeneity by affinity chromatography. The lectin has a molecular weight of 48,000, an S(0)20,w of 4.06 S and a Stokes radius of 2.9 nm. Upon sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, a single band corresponding to Mr of 24,000 was observed both in the presence and absence of beta-mercaptoethanol. The subunits in this dimeric lectin are, therefore, held together solely by noncovalent interactions. The lectin is not a glycoprotein, and secondary structure analysis by CD measurements showed 31% alpha-helix. The hemagglutinating activity of L. acutangula agglutinin was not inhibited by any of the monosaccharides tested. Among the disaccharides only di-N-acetylchitobiose was inhibitory. The inhibitory potency of chito-oligosaccharides increased dramatically with their size up to penta-N-acetylchitopentaose. The lectin has two binding sites for saccharides. The affinity of chito-oligosaccharides for L. acutangula lectin, as monitored by titrating the changes in the near UV-CD spectra and intrinsic fluorescence, increased strikingly with the number of GlcNAc units in them. The values of delta G, delta H, and delta S for the binding process showed a pronounced dependence on the size of the chito-oligosaccharides, indicating that the binding of higher oligomers is progressively more favored thermodynamically than di-N-acetylchitobiose. The thermodynamic data are consistent with an extended binding site in this lectin, which accommodates a tetrasaccharide. 相似文献

It has been shown that the characteristic frequency for some DNA binding proteins overlaps the characteristic frequency of their target DNA sequences. The ratio of type-III to type-I collagen is measured in human conjunctival biopsies from control and diabetic subjects. The tissue is digested by CNBr and the resulting peptides are quantified by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The peptides used are alpha 1-(I)CB7 and alpha 1-(III)CB8. In control population, of type-III collagen slightly increases with age. In two diabetic populations, (juvenile onset diabetes and maturity onset diabetes), the percentage of type-III collagen is significantly higher than in age-matched control groups. These data plus those previously obtained on genetically diabetic mice indicate that diabetes mellitus affects the expression of interstitial collagen phenotype. Preliminary results on prediabetic subjects suggest the role of genetic factors in such alterations. 相似文献

Studies were undertaken to determine whether the effect of alloxan to inactivate a membrane-bound calcium- and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase was specific for the pancreatic islets and whether inactivation of the kinase occurred also after injection of a diabetogenic dose of alloxan into rats. The effect of alloxan was also examined on similar particulate calcium- and calmodulin-dependent kinases present in two other secretory tissues, mammary acini and forebrain. Exposure of alloxan to cell-free preparations of all secretory tissues examined inhibited the calcium- and calmodulin-dependent kinase activities, suggesting that the specificity of alloxan action was not due to the presence in islets of a kinase uniquely sensitive to alloxan. To determine whether the selective effect of alloxan action was mediated at the cellular level, experiments were performed with alloxan presented to intact cells. Whereas alloxan exposure to viable cell preparations of islets and brain decreased the subsequently measured calcium- and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase activity, the activity measured in mammary acini exposed to these alloxan concentrations was unaffected. Injection (i.v.) of a diabetogenic dose of alloxan (50 mg/kg) produced an immediate (10 min) and selective inactivation of the calcium- and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase in pancreatic islests but had no effect on the similar kinases measured in brain and mammary acini. These results indicate that the unique sensitivity of islets to alloxan may result from the ability of alloxan to rapidly gain intracellular access and then inactivate this kinase activity. The selective effect of alloxan injection on this islet protein kinase is consistent with the hypothesis that inactivation of the kinase by alloxan is related to its diabetogenic effect in vivo. 相似文献

During 1972-1982 the bacteriological study of 1391 patients with thermal burns was carried out. As the result of clinico-bacteriological studies, the occurrence of P. aeruginosa was found to increase from 39.3% to 70.5% during this period. The immunotyping of P. aeruginosa cultures isolated in 3 burn-treatment centers showed that strains belonging to immunotypes 2, 3, 7 and 3/7 were most frequently isolated from burn wounds. These strains were found to be the cause of hospital infections in burn-treatment hospitals. In connection with the data thus obtained immunological preparations intended for the prophylaxis and treatment of P. aeruginosa infection should include P. aeruginosa strains, immunotypes 2, 3, 7 and 3/7. 相似文献

Experiments on an isolated spinal cord of 8-15-day-old rats have shown that one of the possible mechanisms of the GABA-potentiating action of the benzodiazepine tranquilizer, chlorodiazepoxide, may be a decrease in the intraneuronal concentration of Ca2+. This is evidenced by the enhancement of the GABA-potentiating action of chlorodiazepoxide under Ca2+ deficiency in the medium and in the presence of the blockers of the voltage-dependent Ca2+ ionic channels--Mn2+ and Co2+, and by the reduction of the effect in question under Ca2+ excess in the medium and in the presence of the K+ channels blockers--tetraethylammonium and 4-aminopyridine. The GABA-potentiating action of harmane is likely to be related to the blockade of the voltage-dependent K+ channels and elevation of the intracellular concentration of Ca2+. 相似文献

Histamine receptor subtypes in isolated human coronary arteries and in human atrial and ventricular myocardium were studied. The H1 receptor mediates contraction of coronary vascular smooth muscle but has no effect on atrial or ventricular tissue.
